TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS OF MUAY THAI
To me, I feel that Thailand seems like a place that gives off a mystical aura. I usually hear tales of people visiting mediums to seek spiritual help. This has led me to believe that Thai people are a superstitious bunch. So i was wondering to myself whether people who practice Muay Thai believed in any superstitions.
So i chanced upon this website - http://www.muaythai.cc/ - which basically describes Muay Thai culture. It was mentioned that before entering the ring, people will wear certain attires and accessories in order to add more entertainment value to the fight. They also have customized tattoo inscriptions, which is believed to bring them good luck, strength and courage, and the carry special amulets which is believed to contain special magical powers. During pre-fight rituals, fighters will practice three bows. During the third one, the fighter will concentrate on thinking someone who is very dear to him.
It is impossible to ignore how Southeast Asian countries are experiencing globalisation, where it seems that western influence is rapidly creeping into our culture and society. Yet it seems that traditional sports like Muay Thai have not succumbed to western influence. People who practiced Muay Thai still pay respect to its traditions, rules and regulations. Hence, I believe traditional culture still has and will continue to have a footing in society.
